Panglao Island

The beach, the sand, the fun in the sun - it's all here in Panglao Island. If you are looking for an alternative to Boracay or Puerto Galera, you may want to visit and try Alona Beach in Panglao Island, Bohol.

Alona Beach is probably the most beautiful, and surely the most developed beach on Panglao Island. Located at the Southwest of the island, this beach is about one and a half kilometers long, lined with nice resorts including The Bohol Diver's Resort where I stayed.

I gather that the Alona Beach was named after a sexy starlet in the 80s, Alona Alegre. She used to shoot movies in that unnamed stretch of beach and the townfolks would often flock the beach to watch her. Boholanos used to call their neighbors and told them "Halikayo puntahan natin si Alona". So even when the movie was long finished the Alona got stuck with the beach.

One of the drawbacks of the beach are the large numbers of sea urchins that inhabit the water, starting some twenty or thirty meters out of the coast. You will just have to be careful when wading. Further, the beach is littered with sea weeds. But I am sure that come summertime, the resort owners would clean them up.

Of course, the best time to stroll in the beach is between five to six in the morning where you can see and view the spectacular sunrise. As evidenced by these three snapshops below taken at 5 am, 5:30 am, and 6 am.

Serene and romantic beach! People are warm and friendly. A place where you can forget everything! Hey! Don't expect an awesome nightlife here! It's going to be you guys, the moon, the beach, the wind, and pareng san mig light!

  6. Alona Beach is one of the prettiest beaches I have ever been. It was more than a paradise to me, I like it better in any other beaches in the Philippines. It was so relaxing and the corals are so fantastic, and I guess its really safe for everyone to visit the place. I together with me partner was there last December and we stayed there for almost a month. We supposed to go to some place aside from Alona, but I decided to stay coz I was so amazed with the beauty of the place and the white sand was so good, it was peaceful and the people are so friendly that you can't find anywhere else.

  9. @ queenie - there are high-end and low-end beach resorts along alona. I stayed in Bohol Diver's Resort, its relatively new and transactions are in dollars but the rates are reasonable.
