Batanes : Up on the Hill and Far-away

Pacita Fundacion Standing Proudly on a Hill

My first afternoon at Batanes was spent riding a motorcycle up the hills of Tukon in Basco. This part of town offers Mount Carmel Chapel, Pacita Fundacion Nature Lodge, PAG-ASA Radar and Japanese hide-out among other. Reaching the top of Tukon will let you enjoy 360 degrees view of Basco, the west China Sea and the east Pacific ocean.

Easily, the best structures in the area are the Mount Carmel Chapel (featured in my previous post with a poem here) and the Pacita Fundacion Nature Lodge which nestled atop rolling hills. Pacita Fundacion was once the home studio of internationally-acclaimed artist Pacita Abad. Now, it is offered as a high-end accommodation in Batanes. The price range in this lodge was intentionally set high so as not to compete with other more affordable place in Batanes. Further, proceeds from this place fund the education of young Ivatan artists as well as heritage conservation projects in Batanes.

Here are some more photos of Pacita Fundacion and other places in Tukon:

  8. These photos are so inviting. When I was there in the Philippines, flights to Batanes are so expensive and rare. So glad that they have daily flights now so I will consider fitting it to my schedule when I go back there this last quarter of the year.
