Iligan City : Maria Christina Falls

Majestic Maria Christina Falls
As far as I can recall, Maria Christina Falls is the first waterfall that I have known. Not that I have personally seen it before but this Falls was prominently featured in our school books and has since been a barometer of what a Philippine attraction should be. Although it took me almost three decades to personally see this waterfalls, still, I was amazed by its grandeur and the power - just as I expected and more!

Strong and Long
Maria Cristina Falls is a waterfall of the Agus River located in Iligan City, Lanao Del Norte. It is also called the "Twin Falls" as the flow is separated by a rock at the brink of the waterfall. This landmark and Iligan City's pride is considered queen of more than twenty waterfalls in the city.

Also Called Twin Falls
It is located 9.3 kilometers away southwest of the city proper at the boundaries of Barangays Maria Cristina, Ditucalan, and Buru-un. Well known for its natural beauty and grandeur, the 98 meters high waterfall is also the primary source of electric power for the city's industries, being harnessed by the Agus VI Hydroelectric Plant.

The road leading to the Falls is a paved concrete all the way to the viewing area. There is a minimal entrance fee and you can park about a hundred meters from the viewing area. The nearest you can legally go near the Falls, as a visitor, is about 300 meters which is fair enough because you can have an unobstructed view of the length of the Falls as well as just few meters away from the river where the water flows. I suppose there is a better view in the concrete structure built nearer the Falls but this is off-limits to visitors.

Mindanao Pride
More of Iligan City and its waterfalls on my next posts.
